UPDATED: Siri Makes a Sesame Street Reference

CookieSometimes I ask myself, “Is this relatively minor thing worth a whole Tough Pigs news item?”  In this case, initially, I decided the answer was an easy no.  But now all kinds of websites are writing about it, including that of the Washington Post, so far be it from me to fall behind in reporting things that have something to do with Muppets.

So here’s the deal: Siri, that usually-helpful electronic voice that comes with iPhones and other iThings, gives an amusing response when you ask her “What is zero divided by zero?”  If you have an iPhone, go ahead and try it now.  If you don’t, skip to the next paragraph.

Siri says the answer is indeterminate, then she says, “Imagine that you have zero cookies, and you split them evenly among zero friends. How many cookies does each person get? See? It doesn’t make sense. And Cookie Monster is sad that there are no cookies, and you are sad that you have no friends.”

Now that this delightful nugget has spread across social media, I fully expect Sesame Workshop to be accused of stealth advertising any minute now.

UPDATE: Cookie Monster has responded to the Siri joke with a tweet:
