It’s that time of year again, to give out shiny trophies to media a random assortment have determined are good enough to have them! The nominations have just been announced the 2024 Children’s and Family Emmy Awards (which split off from the normal Emmys a couple of years ago). Since the last ceremony, Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock have dropped new seasons and guess what? They’re both nominated for many awards!
For Sesame Street, they’re up for:
- Preschool Series (no qualifier there)
- Public Service Initiative: Emotional-Well Being (the category has already been awarded, so Sesame Workshop receives an Honorable Mention for this)
- Puppetry Performer: Leslie-Carrara Rudolph, Eric Jacobson, and David Rudman
- Writing for a Preschool of Children’s Series: “Brave Bessie by Brave Gabrielle” and “Can They Be Friends?“
- Directing for a Multiple Camera Live Action: “The Sign Language ABCs“
- Outstanding Song for a Preschool Program: “That’s Why We Love Nature“
- Editing for a Multiple Camera Live Action
- Lighting, Camera, and Technical Arts
- Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design for a Multiple Camera Program
- Costume Design/Styling (Puppetry Design)
- Short Form Live Action Program: Elmo and Jesse Remember Uncle Jack
- Non-Fiction Program: Elmo and Tango: Holiday Helpers
Meanwhile, Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock is in the running for:
- Children’s or Family Viewing Series
- Puppetry Performer: Donna Kimball and Karen Prell
- Writing for a Preschool of Children’s Series: “I’m Pogey” and “This for That”
- Outstanding Song for a Children’s or Young Teen Program: “Radishes vs. Strawberries”
- Cinematography for a Single Camera Live Action Program
- Editing for a Single Camera Live Action Program
- Visual Effects for a Live Action Program
- Costume Design/Styling (Puppetry Design)
Keen eyes will notice a number of categories in which Sesame and Fraggle are in contention with each other, especially that “Puppetry Performer” category which is all Henson-related people. I hope there’s no fist fight as a result; their hands are their most important assests!
We’ll find out who the winners are next year on March 15, 2025. Until then, imagine the committee arguing over their choices like they’re strawberries and radishes.
