It’s that time of year again. No, not my annual rabies shot. It’s time for another brand-new season of Sesame Street to premiere! Season 53 will be premiering weekly on HBO Max starting Thursday, November 3. As we all are aware by now, the topic of Sesame media and HBO Max is a little dicey right now since they removed a whole bunch of classic episodes, specials, and even Elmo’s Not-Too-Late Show. Their future together may be up in the air, but it’s a little comforting to know they haven’t been given the Batgirl treatment just yet.
This season’s curricular focus will align with the show’s recent “Coming Together” initiative, with a direct emphasis on children’s sense of identity and belonging. We’ll see these topics addressed by the show’s newest characters: Tamir, Gabrielle, and Ji-Young.
And what’s a season of Sesame Street without a few celebrity visitors? This season, we’ll see appearances by Zazie Beetz, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Ava DuVernay, Brett Goldstein, Mickey Guyton, HAIM, Samuel L. Jackson, and Amber Ruffin. You can catch a glimpse of some of them in this trailer for the season!
In addition to the new season, we’ll also be getting a new animated Christmas special:
Sesame Street: The Nutcracker Starring Elmo & Tango stars Biff and Sully…nah, I’m just kidding. It stars Elmo and Tango in a new version of the classic holiday story. How will it compare to the iconic version we have already starring Elmo and Jamie Foxx? We’ll find out when the special drops on HBO Max on Thursday December 1st!
