If you were to ask me what one thing, of all the productions Jim Henson ever worked on, I would most want to own, the answer would be simple. Rowlf the Dog on The Jimmy Dean Show. Every sketch I’ve seen has been brilliant, hilarious, and heartwarming. With so many hours of content, and so much of it unseen, it has long been the White Whale to my Ahab.
Newly released on DVD is The Jimmy Dean Show season 1, volume 1. It’s four discs of homegrown country music, featuring lots and lots of Rowlf & Jimmy segments. According to the infomercial, most of them haven’t been seen in 50 years.
The set is currently available to purchase for a whopping $120 (plus shipping), so you’d have to be a big banjo fan to really get your money’s worth. But hopefully this will lead to more Jimmy and more Rowlf in our homes in the future.
