Muppets Won Big at the Oscars

In case you were one of the four people not watching the Academy Awards, let me be the first to tell you that the Muppets finally did it.  They brought home that little golden statuette that billionaires continuously fight over.  More to the point, Bret McKenzie won the Oscar for “Best Song”, assuring the Muppets’ win for their only nomination.  So that’s, like, a 100% success rate, right?

But that wasn’t all for the evening.  Kermit and Piggy made a few appearances, Bret had a little more to say, and Miss Piggy was rocking that bouffant hairdo like she owns the place.  Let’s take a look at the highlights from the evening.

Darren Criss and Kermit performed “Rainbow Connection” on E!’s pre-show.  It’s a nice enough bit, but there isn’t a whole lot to it.  Thankfully, “Rainbow Connection” is best served without too much flair, and Darren Criss is just harmless enough to deliver on that promise.

Kermit and Piggy interviewed some celebrities on E!’s Red Carpet.  Unfortunately, I don’t have cable, and more unfortunately, E! hasn’t put the footage online yet.  So let’s be patient and pretend the photos below are very funny, memorable Muppet videos, and I’ll replace them with an embedded vid once it becomes available.  Technology, folks!

Kermit and Piggy pulled a “Statler and Waldorf” and appeared in the balcony of the theater to introduce Cirque du Soleil.  And Muppet fans everywhere grumbled at the idea that Cirque du So Lame might have been the replacement for a performance of “Man or Muppet” in the Oscar ceremony.  Harumph!

In the biggest news of the night (Best Picture?  Pssh, whatever.), Bret McKenzie won the Academy Award for “Best Song” for “Man or Muppet”, ushering in the Muppets’ very first Oscar (aside from, y’know).  And much to our joy, Bret thanks the one man we all know had a hand in that success of a film.

Because the acceptance speeches are so brief, the Academy gives all of the winners some time to answer a few questions from the press backstage.  Below, you’ll see Bret’s time in front of the paparazzi, holding his tiny golden man the whole time.
