It turns out those rumors were true: A new series starring our favorite rock band is coming soon to Disney Plus! Sorry, no, it’s not Geri and the Atrics. It’s the Electric Mayhem, and the series is called Muppets Mayhem!
Per Disney’s announcement:
The series “will take audiences on a music-filled journey as, at long last, The Electric Mayhem Band records its first ever album. Lilly Singh (“A Little Late with Lilly Singh,” “Dollface.”) will play the (human) lead role of ‘Nora’ the junior A&R executive tasked with managing and wrangling the mayhem that is The Electric Mayhem Band.”
The series was developed by Adam F. Goldberg, Bill Barretta and Jeff Yorkes based on characters created by Jim Henson. It is written by Adam F. Goldberg (“The Goldbergs”), Bill Barretta (“The Muppets,” “Muppets Haunted Mansion”) and Jeff Yorkes, the executive producers are Goldberg, Barretta, Michael Bostick and Kris Eber. Yorkes is a co-executive producer. The Muppets Studio’s David Lightbody and Leigh Slaughter are also executive producers.
…
After 45 years of rockin’ out, The Electric Mayhem goes on an epic musical journey to finally record their first studio album. With the help of a driven young music executive, Nora, the old-school Muppet band comes face to face with the current day music scene as they try to finally go platinum.
There’s no premiere date as yet. And as with any announcement of a new Muppet project, this leaves us with a lot of questions: Will the other Muppets show up too? How many episodes will it be? Will we finally get an actual Electric Mayhem album that we can listen to and cherish forever? And wait… has the in-universe Electric Mayhem never recorded an album before?!
Personally, I’m jazzed to hear that there’s a new Muppet series coming, and also curious to see what it will be like to have a show that focuses on the Mayhem. The band members have always been supporting characters in the Muppet ensemble — they show up, they say something cool or hilarious, they play a song, and then they peace out and let Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, etc. do the heavy lifting of playing the leads. Including Lilly Singh as a human lead sounds like a really good idea. She can handle all the emotional beats so Animal can concentrate on drum beats.
Stay tuned to this very website for more updates on Muppets Mayhem as we get them!
