The Muppets have made a thousand Christmas specials, and they’ve occasionally dabbled in spooky stuff like the Vincent Price and Alice Cooper episodes of The Muppet Show. But strangely enough, they’ve never done a Halloween special.
That’s about to change. This fall, Muppets Haunted Mansion will premiere on Disney Plus. As Disney’s press release explains it:
The brand-new special will feature a star-studded Muppets cast, celebrity cameos, all-new music and spooky fun for families to enjoy together. The announcement was made today to help celebrate the Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products’ “Halfway to Halloween” event.
It goes on to say that the special “takes place on Halloween night, when Gonzo is challenged to spend one very daring night in the most grim grinning place on Earth …The Haunted Mansion.” There’s also this announcement video from Gonzo himself, accompanied by Pepe:
It’s interesting that Gonzo appears to be the character at the center of the story rather than, say, Kermit or Miss Piggy. Good for Gonzo! There’s a lot of overlap between Muppet fans and Disney theme park fans, so I bet a lot of folks will be eager to check out Gonzo’s encounter with 999 happy haunts.
