When Archaia published Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl’s unproduced script, “Tale of Sand”, into a graphic novel, our initial reaction was one of shouts of glee and amazement. But after the euphoria washed away, we were a little sad, because once it was out, that meant that it’s yet another Henson franchise that will never be expanded. No sequels, no appendices, no interviews with the creators about what else could have been. One book, and that’s it.
Oh how wrong we were.
Coming this July, Archaia and BOOM! Studios will be releasing Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand: The Illustrated Screenplay! The new book will be a hardcover recreation of the final 1974 draft of Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl’s script, along with all of their handwritten notes and layouts. The book will also include nine all new black-and-white pages illustrated by artist Ramón K Pérez that were cut, 19 original inked pages, 16 pages of layouts, and never-before-seen drawings, hand-written notes, and artifacts created from the Jim Henson Archives. Basically, this is going to be a must-have for anyone who owns the Tale of Sand graphic novel.
Or maybe you haven’t bought Tale of Sand yet. If that’s the case, then you should consider getting the box set, also in stores this July, which features both the original graphic novel and the new screenplay book in a prestige slipcase box, as well as a new wraparound cover by Ramón Pérez (seen above).
The screenplay book will retail for $24.99, and the box set will be $49.99.
