If you love Muppets and game shows, last night was your night. We were excited to see Elmo guest hosting HQ, but it turns out yesterday there was a double dose of Muppet magic…a Daily Double dose, if you will. Last night, the venerable TV staple Jeopardy! had an entire category devoted to the Muppet Show gang, or at least their names. The category, “Nom De Muppet,” was the first to be completely finished (with all clues answered correctly) in the first round. And because we’re meticulous note-takers, we even have the category’s questions! Highlight between the parentheses for the answer! (Sadly, we cannot offer the cash value of the questions or a lifetime supply of Rice-A-Roni, so this one’s just for fun.)
$200 – “This balcony-based curmudgeon is named for a New York City hotel—his wife is even named Astoria.” (Who is Waldorf?)
$400 – “He may have told us his name, but we didn’t understand him, so we know him by his nationality.” (Who is The Swedish Chef?)
$600 – “Miss Piggy was named for a Peggy, this ‘Fever’ singer.” (Who is Peggy Lee?)
$800 – “One of the 2 scientific Muppets who share their names with laboratory equipment.” (Who is Beaker or Dr. Bunsen Honeydew?)
$1,000 – “Rizzo the Rat’s name came from Dustin Hoffman’s character in this Best Picture Oscar winner.” (What is Midnight Cowboy?)
I’m willing to bet that that would’ve been a pretty easy $3,000 for most of you. Here’s hoping the Muppets make a return appearance to Jeopardy! soon. Maybe a follow up: “Om-Nom-Nom De Muppet.”
