It seems like this new Sesame Street movie is really happening! Following recent buzz about Anne Hathaway’s role in the movie, Deadline is reporting that comedian & filmmaker Bo Burnham will be writing songs for the film. I notice they’re not saying he’s writing all the songs for the movie, but they’re also not saying he’s not writing all the songs for the movie. So maybe there will be other songwriters, but maybe there won’t. Wild speculation is fun!
Burnham is an entertaining stand-up comic who has written several funny songs for his act and his YouTube channel. His directorial debut Eighth Grade doesn’t really have anything to do with Sesame Street, but it was a good movie. So that’s good!
And hey, did we know the Sesame movie is set for a January 15, 2021 release? That’s also being reported. And there’s this synopsis:
In the movie, directed by Jonathan Krisel, Big Bird and his Sesame Street friends are mysteriously expelled from their neighborhood, finding themselves in Manhattan. They team up with a plucky history show host Sally Hawthorne who’s on a quest to save her show and prove that Sesame Street actually exists, with obstacles created by the “evil” mayor, with reasons of his own for keeping Sesame Street hidden from the world.
That could be interesting. I like that it sounds like an ensemble piece, rather than focusing on one Muppet character. What do you think are the chances it will be called Can You Tell Me How to Get to Sesame Street? If that turns out to be the title, I’m a genius. If not, I never said that.
