Sesame Street Spoof Avenue Q Is Closing

The stage musical Avenue Q expertly parodied Sesame Street back before parodying Sesame Street was still rare.  The show wasn’t only hilarious, it was also a huge success, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Sadly, we’ve learned that not all things must last, as Avenue Q will be shutting its doors for good next April, 2019.

The show premiered on Broadway in the summer of 2003, and moved to an off-Broadway theater in 2009, where it became a mainstay of the New York theater scene.

The original cast boasted several Muppet alums, including John Tartaglia, Stephanie D’Abruzzo, Rick Lyon, and Jennifer Barnhart, with Peter Linz also joining the cast later on.  Double-EGOT winner Bobby Lopez won his first Tony for co-writing the songs for Avenue Q.

Despite the fact that Avenue Q isn’t an official Muppet, Henson, or Sesame production, it holds many ties to the Muppet world.  Especially if you’ve seen the show, which is chock-full of Sesame inspiration.

If you haven’t seen Avenue Q and you might be near the NYC area before next April, do yourself a favor and get to the theater!
