The Henson Company Lot’s Potential Buyers Are… McG and John Mayer?!

We’ve known for a while now that the Jim Henson Company has been looking to sell its studio lot in Hollywood, which was formerly the home of A&M Records, the Adventures of Superman and Perry Mason TV series, and Charlie Chaplin’s own movie studio. There was an unpleasant rumor about a potential buyer some weeks ago, but that turned out to be just an unfounded rumor, so the future of the lot remained uncertain.

Now Deadline is reporting that musician John Mayer and filmmaker McG are “under contract” to purchase the lot. According to Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro, a representative for Mayer has confirmed this. (See? That’s what you do before you go spreading rumors — you fact-check them with people who are actually involved!)

Henson fans and fans of Hollywood history have been anxiously anticipating word on who might be the next owner of the historic lot, and hoping the buyers would respect the history of the place and continue to use it for its intended purpose. I never would have predicted the director of Charlie’s Angels and Terminator Salvation and the singer of “Your Body Is a Wonderland” as the next owners of the lot, but it bodes well that they’re creative artists and not, say, real estate developers.

Stay tuned as we await additional news on the sale!
