We are extremely saddened to report that country music icon Kenny Rogers has passed away.
Rogers first reached stardom with his band, Kenny Rogers and The First Edition, before branching out to a wildly successful career primarily in country music. With such hit songs as “The Gambler,” “Coward of the County,” “Islands in the Stream” with Dolly Parton, “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In),” and “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town,” Rogers became one of the highest-selling musical artists of all time.
But of course, we remember Rogers for role as the guest star in a season 4 episode of The Muppet Show. (We reviewed the episode here.)
You may recall that Rogers performed “The Gambler” and “Love Lifted Me” in his guest appearance, while Kermit recuperated from falling from a trapeze platform. This was a significant achievement in spite of a group of Muppets drilling for oil in his dressing room. It may be best known as the episode that featured “Coconut.”
Rogers certainly was a guest star that looked like he was having fun making his episode. Look at the smile on his face as he sings the final chorus of “The Gambler.” We should all be that happy.
And his joy is visible once again in “Love Lifted Me,” as the Muppet ensemble comes together in an inspirational song.
In honor of Kenny Rogers, we suggest you listen to some of his most iconic songs. Though he may have been known for “The Gambler,” his voice and passion was a sure bet.
