We are saddened to learn that Stan Lee, one of the pioneering figures at Marvel Comics and co-creator of such iconic superheroes as Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, the X-Men, The Fantastic Four, and countless others, has passed away at 95.
For Muppet fans, Lee was best known as one of the people behind Marvel Productions, the animation studio which produced the original run of Muppet Babies, the animated Fraggle Rock series, and the animated segments of Little Muppet Monsters. Marvel Comics also has a history with the creative worlds of Jim Henson. Marvel published the comic book runs of Muppet Babies and the original Fraggle Rock comics, as well as limited-run adaptations of The Dark Crystal, The Muppets Take Manhattan, and Labyrinth through their Marvel Super Special series. And most recently, Marvel republished The Muppet Show‘s comic book run, and published “The Muppet Show: The Four Seasons.”
Lee appeared onscreen in the 1989 Muppet Babies episode “Comic Capers.” (Making this one of his earliest cameos in a Marvel production.) He was “webbed” by “Spider-Dog” (aka Rowlf) and “Spider-Girl” (aka Skeeter) as they were arguing who who could be their version of Spider-Man. Naturally, Lee reminded us all, “Don’t you know there’s only one Spider-Man?” (This was pre-Spider-Verse, for all you comics fans.)
Not only are we Muppet fans here at ToughPigs, but a lot of us are also comics fans, too. Lee’s creative worlds have captivated and enthralled us, and we’ve even talked about Marvel here from time to time. There was only one Stan Lee, and we’ll miss him very much. Excelsior!
