Jarrod Fairclough – In 2002, NBC and The Jim Henson Company got together to make the new Muppet Christmas classic, It’s A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie. The special introduced is notable for a few reasons, one being that it was the first major appearance of Eric Jacobson’s Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear. But it also introduced someone who has entered Muppet folklore and is now one of the most beloved characters in the entire franchise. I speak, of course, about the hard of hearing Asian Security Guard, played by actor Colin Foo!
Though we only know him as Security Guard, and though he only gets a few moments of screen time, Muppet fans have largely embraced the character, and it’s common to find children dressed up as him for Halloween. Toy company Diamond Select, who are currently preparing to sell a new series of Muppet action figures, recently announced a whole line of Security Guard toys, featuring him in different outfits, like Malibu Security Guard.
For those who have no idea who I’m talking about (and I find that VERY hard to believe), Security Guard and Fozzie had a comical conversation at Bitterman Bank and Development, where Security Guard constantly mis-hears Fozzie’s questions about where to put his bag of money. You remember that classic scene, right?
It’s been suggested by multiple fan sites and even some credible news sources that Security Guard could turn up in the new ABC series, possibly playing the studio Security Guard. In fact, I have heard that George Clooney was lined up to make a guest appearance, but pulled out when he learnt that Security Guard was not yet a cast member.
In a time where everyone is quoting Muppet Christmas Carol, or watching Muppet Family Christmas, take a moment out of your day this year to remember this beloved character! We miss you, Security Guard. Come back soon!
(This might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever written)
