Are you hip to Sporcle, one of the most delightful and satisfying time-consumers the internet has to offer? The site’s tagline is “mentally stimulating diversions,” and it’s completely devoted to timed quizzes designed to test your knowledge of pretty much any topic you can think of. Can you name every episode of Lost in twenty minutes? Can you guess the most common street names in the US in nine minutes? Given a list of 52 islands, can you identify the ones that are located in the Caribbean Sea in four minutes?
Unsurprisingly, a number of the quizzes found on the site cover Muppet-related topics. This is unsurprising because Sporcle allows users to create their own quizzes, and many of those users are Muppet fans, and Muppet fans are always eager to show off their vast oceans of accumulated Muppet knowledge. For example, here’s a Muppet thing I know: Fozzie Bear wears a hat. Did YOU know that?
I combed through Sporcle and came up with a list of the more notable and/or fun and/or challenging Muppet-related quizzes, several of which were created by members of the Tough Pigs family. I left out a few of the easier ones (I think everyone here knows the words to the Muppet Show theme song) to ensure maximum mental stimulation. Try them all today!
Guest Stars Who Have Actually Appeared on Sesame Street
Hey, I made this quiz! Sesame Street has welcomed so many famous people, and even a few famous fictional characters, as guest stars over the years that sometimes even a hardcore Sesame nerd might find it tricky to recall who’s been on the show and who hasn’t. I’m pretty sure Richard Pryor was on the show… but what about Wanda Sykes? And have Max Headroom and Chester Cheetah both made appearances? This quiz features a list of 50 notable names. Can you pick the ones who have appeared on Sesame Street?
Follow That Line: Muppet Edition
This quiz by Sporcle user Puzzgal is a fun one. In The Muppet Movie, Dom DeLuise’s Bernie the Agent has a line where he says, “I’ve got to get out of this swamp. I’ve got a plane to catch.” Do you know what Kermit says next? Maybe he says “Very popular choice.” Or maybe he says “No one’s ever tried that before.” Or does he say “RENOIR?” You have fifteen minutes to match 28 lines of dialogue to the lines that came next. Puzzgal also made a delightful sequel quiz, which includes the immortal line “What color are their hands now?”
Muppets in the “Bohemian Rhapsody” Video
One of the biggest thrills of watching the Muppets’ “Bohemian Rhapsody” music video when it debuted on YouTube was seeing how many familiar Muppets they crammed into it. Can you name them all? This one was created by Tough Pigs’ own Joe Hennes, who was pleased as punch when it was published on Sporcle’s main page as their first video quiz. Sporcle’s recently introduced space-age technology allows you to take this quiz right here, right now!
Muppet Show Guest Stars
This quiz was created by Tough Pigs’ own Anthony Strand! There were 120 episodes of The Muppet Show, each with a guest star (or occasionally, a grouping of guest stars). Can you name them all? Sure you can! Here’s a free one to get you started: Elke Sommer. You’re welcome.
Adam Sandler’s “Song About Elmo”
Sporcle user scarequotes came up with this quiz, but I wish I’d thought of it first. A few years back, Adam Sandler appeared on Sesame Street to sing a whimsical song full of rhymes for the name “Elmo,” and this quiz challenges you to finish each line of the song with the appropriate rhyme. If you can complete this quiz without having to watch the video clip for reference, you’re doing pretty well-mo.
Songs From the Muppet Movie Soundtracks
It’s another one by Tough Pigs Joe! In this quiz, you have to name every song from every Muppet film soundtrack, from The Muppet Movie to the movie The Muppets. Casual Muppet fans will find it easy to come up with the classics, but only the true fanatic will be able to name every instrumental and every funk track from Muppets From Space.
Which Muppet Movie?
Who is this Puzzgal person, anyway? Does she read Tough Pigs? Perhaps she’s too busy watching Muppet movies, which are the basis for this quiz. Name the movie in which “Piggy, on roller skates, chases a purse snatcher.” Okay, now name the movie in which “Gonzo tries to get on a boat, but F. Murray Abraham won’t let him in.” This one will be pretty easy for most people who own at least seven DVDs with the word “Muppet” in the title, but it would be a great one to send to your civilian friends to see if they were really paying attention the last time you made them watch The Great Muppet Caper.
Muppet Show and Simpsons Guest Stars
And now here’s one for the detail-oriented fans, such as Tough Pigs’ Anthony Strand, who created this little doozy of a quiz. Eight Muppet Show guest stars have appeared on The Simpsons in its ridiculously long run. Name them all! Anthony also made a quiz for actors who have appeared in both Pixar films and Muppet movies, which is also beautifully nerdy.
International Sesame Street Muppets
Any quiz where “Moishe Oofnik” is an answer is a quiz worth taking, in my book. Created by user BobThePizzaBoy, which I think might be the nom de Sporcle of Tough Pigs friend John P, this quiz simply requires you to name Muppet characters from ten foreign co-productions of Sesame Street.
Kermit’s Swamp Alphabet
The object of this quiz, created by Sporcle user TidoMN, is to name the words that correspond to each letter of the alphabet in Kermit’s song “ABCs of the Swamp” from Sesame Street. I don’t know the song all that well, but I found you can get pretty far on the quiz just by typing of words that have something to do with swamps. Which is probably how Joe Raposo wrote the song anyway.
Characters in the Muppet Mural
It’s another Joe Hennes quiz, and another name-as-many-Muppets-as-you-can quiz! You’ve probably already spent a fair amount of time staring at the Muppet Theater mural that used to decorate the old Henson company townhouse. So you won’t need anywhere near 15 minutes to identify every character in every row, from Red Fraggle to the Mighty Favog. You can do it two minutes, tops. Right?
All the Greastest Muppets Ever
I don’t completely understand this quiz, but I had to try it as soon as I stumbled upon it. You have five minutes to name the fourteen “greastest [sic] Muppets ever.” Twelve of them are categorized as Sesame, one as Jim Jam, and one as Eminem. I’ll confess I only got eleven correct. How about you?
And there you have it! If you have any ideas for Muppet quizzes that aren’t on Sporcle yet, I encourage you to create them posthaste, especially if they’re Fraggle Rock quizzes. There seems to be a dearth of Fraggle stuff for some reason. And please enjoy your Sporcling.
