Oscar at the Emmys
May 20, 2005: It’s another year, another shelf full of Emmy Awards for Sesame Street. This year, they took home four awards — for outstanding pre-school children’s program, outstanding direction in a children’s series, outstanding art direction, and outstanding performer in a children’s series for Kevin Clash. One of the highlights of the broadcast was a surprising appearance by Oscar the Grouch and a friend from Pine Valley…

And now, please welcome two of television’s grumpiest characters… from Sesame Street, Oscar the Grouch… and from All My Children, Adam the Grouch — David Canary! |
(Oscar emerges from a trash can… and David pops up from another. David beams at Oscar, who sighs.)
David
|
Oscar… |
Oscar
|
Yeah? |
David
|
This is the closest I’ve ever been to an Oscar. Thanks for letting me spend time with you today. |
Oscar
|
Hey, I had no choice. |
Oscar |
Who are you again? |
David
|
David Canary… the actor. |
Oscar
|
The actor. Well, there goes the neighborhood. |
David |
C’mon, Oscar. As one grouch to another… Can’t we just get along? |
Oscar
|
I don’t know. You don’t seem so grouchy to me. |
David
|
Well, when I’m grouchy, it’s because I’m acting. Why are you so grouchy? |
Oscar
|
I’ve seen your acting. |
David
|
Here are the nominees for outstanding performer in a children’s series. |

Levar Burton, for Reading Rainbow… Kevin Clash, for Sesame Street… Jeff Corwin, for Jeff Corwin Unleashed… and Donovan Patton, for Blue’s Clues. |
David
|
And the Emmy goes to… Kevin Clash, as Elmo on Sesame Street! |
Oscar
|
Oh! Well, I’ll have to take it for him. |
(David steps out of the trash can to take the award.)
Oscar

I don’t know why he wants one of these things. After all, they’re nice and shiny, and everyone who gets one is so happy. Yuccch! But, I’ll take it anyway. Maybe I’ll keep it for myself. Heh heh… |
