Netflix released a trailer today that is of particular interest to Jim Henson fans: It’s for an upcoming Netflix original series called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
Yeah. A Dark Crystal series. Check it out:
As reported by Variety and others, the series will be executive-produced and directed Louis Leterrier, of Now You See Me fame, with Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, and Javier Grillo-Marxuach writing. Other producers and executive producers include Lisa Henson, Halle Stanford, veteran Henson producer Rita Peruggi, and JHC’s Blanca Lista. We can expect to see 10 episodes.
You know, I like to think of myself as a cynical cool guy, so my instinct is to say something like, “Oh, great. They’re reviving a property from 35 years ago. And probably without most of the people who worked on the original. I’m so cynical and cool.”
But then I see in the trailer that they appear to be using lots of animatronic puppets and practical effects — like, things that exist in real, three-dimensional space! If that Skeksis from the final seconds is a new creature built for this series, it looks pretty darn good. And then I remember that although The Dark Crystal was kind of a boring movie, the world it takes place in is strange and cool, and a talented creative team just might be able to do something new and special with it.
Is it cliché to say I’m cautiously optimistic?
