First Look at NECA’s Sesame Street Figure Line

Just a few short weeks ago, we reported that NECA would be producing some figures of Bert and Ernie as a part of their “Toony TV” line. Those figures are rather stylized, to fit that theme. It has now be revealed at SDCC that NECA is working on new Sesame Street line of figures that are hewing more to screen-accuracy. These “Ultimate” figures all appear to have two different heads, some very referential accessories, and some Muppet letters of the alphabet, all resembling actual puppets from the show. Let’s take a looky-loo!

First up, there’s everyone’s favorite really old guy Count von Count. He seems to be packaged with one of his batty bats, a candelabra (based on a 1973 sketch), and a rotary telephone (referencing another 1973 sketch). It’s not clear from the display which of these letters, if any, the Count would come with. But it’s a safe bet it would be “C,” since his name starts with that. Or possibly the “N” for numbers. Or the “A” for arithmetics. Or the “E” for enumeration. Huh. Guess I didn’t narrow that down after all.

As mentioned before, the letters are all based on actual puppets from the show. The N and A are more recent creations, but the letter C appears to be based on the puppet used in “C Drives Me Crazy” (but without its neat filigree) and best of all, the letter E is modelled after the puppet from Guy Smiley’s Letter of the Day Pageant, complete with her cape and tear of victory. I’m so proud of her.

Next a little look at Bert. You remember Bert, right? He had that hit song, “Doin’ the Pigeon!” Anywho, Bert comes with his book of “Boring Stories,” his collection of bottle caps, a box of his paperclips, and Bernice the pigeon. Can’t forget her! The eyes look just a tad too crossed on these prototypes, so we’re hoping this gets corrected before they hit stores.

Finally, there’s our ol’ pal Ernie. He comes with Rubber Duckie, as nature intended, and the classic portrait of him and Bert that hangs in their apartment. There’s also the famous Sesame Street lamppost situated in the display near him, but it’s not clear whether this is an accessory for him as well, or is merely just part of the display (if it’s an accessory at all for any figure).

In addition to the Ultimate figures, a new Oscar the Grouch figure was shown off. This will also be a part of the “Toony TV” line, so he’s got more of a cartoony look on him. And it’s telling you to scram! He’s always saying that!

We’ll keep you updated on further news regarding these figures!
