ToughPigs is saddened to learn that songwriter, musician, and actor Kris Kristofferson has passed away at the age of 88.

After serving as a helicopter pilot in the United States Army, Kristofferson established himself as a songwriter in the Nashville music scene, crafting such hits as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” and “For the Good Times.” Not long after, he became well-known as country music superstar, and in 1985, joined fellow outlaw country icons Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash to form The Highwaymen. In the 1970’s, Kristofferson added movie star to his list of many talents, appearing in such films as Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, the 1976 remake of A Star is Born, Heaven’s Gate, and the Blade trilogy.

Of course, Muppet fans will recognize him for guest starring with his then-wife Rita Coolidge on the third season of The Muppet Show. There, he sang one of his most endearing songs, “Help Me Make it Through the Night,” with Miss Piggy, and later, “Song I’d Like to Sing” with Coolidge.

For all the music and joy he brought us, we’re grateful he spent some time with the Muppets.
