Muppet RaceMania came out over two decades ago and the itch to play a game where a Muppet drives a kart in a wacky, IP-based racing scenario has yet to be scratched…until now!
Variety reports that Kermit the Frog will be one of the new additions to the Disney Speedstorm racing game in Season 7, finally bringing some Muppet representation to the game of which I will admit I know nothing about. I understand that it is free-to-play, but there are many in-game purchases you can get if you wanna have more fun. It’s not clear from that article how one can obtain Kermit, whether you have to buy him, if he’s a limited-time character, or you can unlock him as a free bonus by earning enough bling-blong points from hitting the sloop-floop with your flippidy-flop. You know, typical video game stuff.
As a “Speedster Class” racer, a term which I assume has meaning, Kermit posses his own unique tactic in helping himself race better and eliminate the competition, “cleverly” titled “Banjo Connection.” Once activated, Kermit busts out his trusty banjo and starts playing a song, powering his car to give him a speed boost. If another racer like, say, Jack Sparrow, gets close enough, they get a smaller boost, but increase Kermit’s boost. When Kermit’s power is at maximum charge, he becomes invulnerable to other weapons and racers like, say, Guy from “Paperman,” will loose speed if they are within range. Sounds simple to me!
Here are a few more looks at Kermit and his car from the game:
There are some neat details and easter eggs within his get-up. His racer number, 55, must be a reference to the year 1955, when Kermit entered the world as a humble little guy on local television. His uniform also bears a patch of “Mooney & Son’s,” not just a reference to Mad Man Mooney from The Muppet Movie, but also how the business is shown to evolved in 2011’s The Muppets. While Kermit’s car appears to be defaulted in his trademark green, it also has a psychedelic paint job that recalls the rainbow-colored Studebaker from The Muppet Movie. Thanks for doing your homework, video game designers!
