Costume Designer Julie Harris, who designed clothing for The Beatles, James Bond films, Frank Langella’s Dracula, and more has sadly passed away this week. Notably, Harris also created the costumes for the human characters in The Great Muppet Caper.
While Calista Hendrickson busied herself with dressing the Muppets, Julie Harris handled the rest of the cast, including the high fashion of Lady Holiday and the trio of Nicky Holiday’s hechmodels, Marla, Carla and Darla. As someone who embodied film fashion of the 1960s and 1970s, Harris was perfect for the job. Just look at some of these costumes:
Right?? That’s some classy stuff.
We spoke to Jim Henson Company Archivist Karen Falk for more information about Julie Harris, and she told us that the Archives holds a memo from Executive Producer David Lazer, requesting that Lady Holiday’s white coat (seen above) be given to Harris as a gift. So obviously, her work on The Great Muppet Caper was well appreciated!
For more of Julie Harris’s work, be sure to check out any of her 80+ films, which include Live and Let Die, Casino Royale, Help!, A Hard Day’s Night, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Rollerball, and more.
