RIP Henry Kissinger, Who Never Worked with the Muppets

Usually when we write these obituaries on ToughPigs, they’re for folks who’ve actually worked with the Muppets. They appeared on TV shows or met them on red carpets, or even had their publicists write recipes for cookbooks. Lots of celebs have crossed paths with the Muppets, and we tend to have a policy of avoiding the ones who haven’t. But for Henry Kissinger, we’re making an exception.

We have learned that Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State under Richard Nixon, has passed away. While his life as a controversial diplomat, author, and statesman didn’t garner himself enough fame to earn himself an obituary on this website, his near run-in with the Muppets was interesting enough to mention here.

In the script for The Muppet Movie, Kissinger was name-dropped as a desired cameo. As the script states, “Yes folks, the real Henry Kissinger. We know it’s impossible, but we’ll get him anyway.” Had Kissinger agreed to appear in the film, he would’ve popped up throughout the story, hoping that Kermit would put him in the film, only to be rejected over and over again. The randomness of this cameo being attached to a personality like Kissinger would’ve made it hilarious.

In Muppet Treasure Island, Gonzo finds Kissinger’s book “Diplomacy” amongst Billy Bones’ belongings.

On Muppets Tonight, Kissinger was set to appear as the series’ very first cameo guest star. His real-life son-in-law was Jim Henson Company producer Alex Rockwell, who helped to make the connection. According to the Muppet Wiki, he would’ve shared a scene with a female guest star who ended up canceling and being replaced by Michelle Pfeiffer. When the mystery woman backed out, so did Kissinger.

So as you can see, Henry Kissinger almost appeared with the Muppets a couple times, and in what would’ve been memorable moments in popular productions. Unfortunately, he missed out on his chance, and he missed out on the opportunity to be remembered for something more positive than working for Nixon.
