RIP Ed Koch

Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch passed away this week at the age of 88.  Although he’s remembered for running the most populous city in the United States, he’s also known to folks like us for his memorable cameo in The Muppets Take Manhattan.

As you recall, when Kermit goes missing, Gonzo goes directly to the top to ask the mayor if he’s seen a frog that can sing and dance.  Quick as ever, Koch replies that if said frog can balance the budget, he’ll hire him.

A year earlier, he appeared in an issue of Muppet Magazine as the winner of “The Great Muppet Look-Alike Contest”.  The Muppet he mostly resembled: Gonzo.

And of course, because he was the mayor of New York, he had his share of close encounters with the Sesame Street gang, as you can see in the photo below.
