There’s a lot I don’t know about Bob McGrath. I have no idea, for example, what his shoe size was. I also don’t know what he considered to be his favorite ice cream topping or whether he preferred to place the toilet paper on the holder in an “over” or “under” orientation. But one thing I have always unequivocally known about lovable Sesame Street human Bob: the man loved a good sweater. This sartorial passion seems to have carried over to the actor Bob McGrath as well, and you can see it throughout the history of Sesame Street.
While Bob was not always seen wearing a sweater in the earliest years of the show, he can definitely be spied in a cozy cardigan from time to time:
By the time I started watching the show, it seemed like Bob was always keeping toasty in style. Sometimes it was with textured sweaters:
Other times he sported geometric ones:
He had several tessellated ones:
One sweater that I was privileged to see in person when I met Bob for the first time was this puzzle-piecey one, and he’s seen wearing it A LOT. Does anyone know what its first appearance was?
It also seems to have inspired this photoshopped version!
Is it possible this one is a Magic Eye Puzzle?? I’ve been staring at it a while, and no picture has popped out… yet.
I think all the funkier sweaters were in the wash this day:
Like the sweaters he donned, Bob was colorful and bright. Warm and comforting. Consistent and reliable. He was a thread in the fabric of our childhood, and he will be dearly missed.
