ToughPigs is saddened to learn that comedian and television icon Bob Newhart has passed away at the age of 94.
Known for his deadpan delivery, he began his career in standup, where he became known for his witty monologues. His 1960 album, “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” was a smash hit, becoming the first comedy album to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. He would soon take his talents to television, first hosting a short-lived variety series in 1961, before getting his own sitcom, The Bob Newhart Show, which ran from 1972 to 1978. He found further success in the 1980’s starring in Newhart from 1982 to 1990. Even if you’re not familiar with the show, you may know about its final episode, which has gone down as one of the most memorable series finales in history.
Luckily, with all of his credits, Newhart got to share a brief moment with the Muppets when he hosted the 1992 special Holiday Greetings from The Ed Sullivan Show. Promoting The Muppet Christmas Carol, the gang performed “It Feels Like Christmas.” Just before the number, Newhart expressed his admiration for Miss Piggy’s karate chops, and she offered a demonstration aimed at Kermit. Tired of frequently being on the receiving end, he ducked, and Newhart took the full brunt of her strength.
For all the laughter Bob Newhart gave us, we are eternally grateful.
