Big Bird Returns to the Metropolitan Museum of Art

In 1983, Big Bird made a special visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or as New York locals call it, The Met) as seen in the terrific special “Don’t Eat the Pictures“. Now, 38 years later, Big Bird has returned.

The Met features rotating art exhibits on its roof, and the latest – by artist Alex Da Corte – features our favorite feathered friend. The piece, titled “As Long as the Sun Lasts” is 28 feet tall, featuring Big Bird holding a ladder and balancing on a mobile that moves kinetically with the wind.

As you can see, Big Bird is painted blue, ala the saddest scene in cinema history from Follow That Bird. It most definitely gives off a feeling of melancholy, just like we felt after seeing Big Bird as the Bluebird of Happiness in the film.

This version of Big Bird is covered in over 7,000 laser-cut aluminum feathers, which I presume makes him a bit heavier and sharper than the actual version.

Big Bird will be on display at The Met from now until October 31st. We hope the world will open up again soon and Muppet fans will begin to return to New York to see this amazing piece.
