Between the current WGA writers strike and the uncertainty of the state of streaming media, this is a worrisome time to be a TV consumer. And now that Disney+ and Hulu have announced a merger, that’s one fewer network for original programming, and changes are most certainly afoot.
Disney has announced that over 50 TV shows and specials will be removed from their networks on May 26th. With no physical media (such as DVDs) for most of these shows, their removal means they’ll be inaccessible to view by any legitimate means.
Among the list of shows being removed are The Jim Henson Company’s Earth to Ned, which was a marvel of puppetry, and a great showcase of what the Henson Company is capable of. Also being removed are two shows with Muppet appearances. Best in Snow – a one-shot competition special about people building snow sculptures features a cameo by Kermit the Frog, and Foodtastic – a cooking competition reality show that featured a Muppet-themed finale with appearance by Kermit, Piggy, Gonzo, and the Swedish Chef.
Naturally, we’re disappointed to see any Muppet or Henson content disappear, and it’s a good reminder that nothing is promised to stick around forever. So enjoy your Muppets Mayhem and Muppet Show reruns while you can – you never know what might be removed next.
