Hot on the heels of the announcement that the new Muppet movie has started filming, we now have another casting rumor. News in Film is reporting that Michael Cera (Arrested Development, Juno, Superbad) has been offered the chance to voice Walter, the new puppet character who aspires to join the Muppets; while Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine, The Return of Captain Invincible, the Alan Arkin episode of The Muppet Show) may be playing a Muppet Theater tour guide.
News in Film cites Production Weekly as a source, and links to this website, which I can’t make heads or tails of, so who knows if this is even true. But I would approve of both those choices… Alan Arkin is a funny guy (although his career may have peaked with the Larry & Phyllis sketches on Sesame Street in 1970). And of course, I would prefer to hear the voice of the actual Muppet performer playing Walter, but if they’re set on hiring a star for the voiceover, Michael Cera’s not a bad choice, even if most of his characters are pretty much the same guy.
So, does anyone want to predict whose name we’ll hear attached to the new Muppet movie next? I’m gonna go ahead and guess Lou Ferrigno.
