After the success of the temporary “Jim Henson: Puppeteer” exhibit a few years back, The Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta announced that it would be adding a permanent “Jim Henson wing” to its collection of artifacts from the history of puppets. It’s been a while since we heard any concrete updates, but now the Center has announced that the Jim Henson Collection will be part of a major expansion expected to open in 2015.
The press release-y page can be found here, and here’s the relevant info:
In 2007, Jim Henson’s family announced a momentous gift of puppets and props to the Center for Puppetry Arts. We are thrilled that approximately half of our expanded museum space will be dedicated to the Jim Henson Collection.
This interactive exhibition will follow Henson’s prolific imagination chronologically, transporting visitors through environments that typified the master puppeteer’s world such as Jim’s Office and the Television Studio.
In addition to learning how Henson’s characters came to life and are still performed, visitors will be able to view iconic puppets such as Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy.
The idea of physically walking through Jim Henson’s career sounds like it will make for a super-cool exhibit. And check out this drawing. It’s like you’ll actually to get to hang out in Jim’s office!
I wonder if visitors will be allowed to sit down at Jim’s desk and draw pictures of Ernie. That’s what I’d want to do, anyway.
If you’d like to donate to the cause and help make the Center’s expansion a reality, you can do so at this page. And after you do that, start saving for your trip to Atlanta!
