In my pre-ToughPigs days, one of my favorite articles was reading about the other 1978 Sesame Street Christmas special, as written by our predecessor Danny Horn. So says Danny,
“Remember that great Sesame Street Christmas special from 1978? The one with Leslie Uggams thinking that lemonade is hot cocoa? The one with Anne Murray and the magic eggnog container? The one where Oscar adopts a kitten with a broken leg, and Ethel Merman calls Imogene Coca an idiot?
“No, no, no — NOT the one where Big Bird worries about Santa Claus coming down the chimney, and Bert and Ernie sacrifice to buy each other Christmas presents. I’m talking about the OTHER Sesame Street Christmas special from 1978.”
In a surprise move, A Special Sesame Street Christmas is coming to DVD on November 6. Finally, you’ll get to see Oscar sing the classic Christmas carol “Yakkity Yak”, Dick Smothers as a spaceman without Tommy at his side, and an inexplicable Michael Jackson cameo, all in DVD quality.

You may have noticed, everything here looks a little cheap, from the website to the trailer to the DVD cover. We’re currently looking into the possibility that this is a hoax, but for the time being, let’s bask in the assumption that we’re finally getting this ridiculous Christmas special on DVD, and we’ll be starting an all-new Christmas viewing tradition!
