Meet Baby Sweetums: Muppet Babies Easter Eggs

Just last week, we found ourselves opining about the fact that the new Muppet Babies series may be something we’re interested/concerned about, but we still need a reminder that the show will be for kids, and not the fans.  And then, just a few short days later, Disney released a short video that may have proved us wrong.  A little.

Within the announcement that Jenny Slate will be providing the voice for Miss Nanny, there are a handful of Easter eggs, obviously planted there for the fans.  Does it mean we should expect more of this?  Or more characters to show up?  We can only speculate.  If I had to guess, I’d say that the show is apologizing for not including Skeeter, Scooter and Rowlf by adding tiny hints at a bigger Muppet Babies universe, but leaving it at just those hints.  I hope I’m wrong, but we won’t really know until the show premieres.

First, watch the video and see how many Easter eggs you spot!

Didja see them all?  Did we see them all??  Probably not!  But here’s what we’ve got so far:

See those books on the shelves?  If you zoom in real close, you can see pictures of Sam the Eagle, Janice, Pepe, and the Swedish Chef on the spines.  I couldn’t tell you why it looks like the nursery has multiple copies of each book… maybe Animal has a penchant for biting into them?  If it’s too hard to see, look below for a zoom-and-enhance.

I’m not sure why, but Pepe’s book looks like a Japanese imprint of “It’s Hard Out Here for a Shrimp.”

In case you didn’t spot Sam the Eagle in that earlier picture, he’s much easier to see in our second look at the book case.  What sorts of books do you think Sam would write?  Probably something political, but I’d hope he’d surprise us all with a romance novel or the history of badminton or something.

This shot got a lot of fans excited – that’s Scooter and Skeeter on a teeter-totter in the background!  It’s nice that the showrunners haven’t forgotten that they exist, but is it a nice homage or a cruel tease to have them in the shot but not in the show?

Also seen in that picture, giant Kermit eyes on the chalkboard!  Kermit is always watching…

See those framed pictures on the wall?  It looks like there are some more Babies who are also Muppets up there!  I know, it’s hard to see… let’s get a closer look.

It’s tough to tell due to the weird angle, but that looks like Baby Sweetums and Baby Sam the Eagle (making his adult appearance on those book spines awfully conspicuous)!  I gotta admit, those two would make great Muppet Babies, as the too-big-for-his-diapers kid and the straight-laced-crybaby.  It’s harder to tell who’s in the frame above them, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t look like Lew Zealand holding a fish.  I would pay actual moneydollars to see Baby Lew Zealand on this show.  Make it happen, Disney Junior!

Just think, all these Easter eggs are just from what we’ve spotted in a minute-long video.  I can’t even imagine what might be crammed in or tucked away in a full episode.  Thankfully, we only have a few more weeks to find out.
