My Favorite Sam and Friends Character of All Time: Chicken Liver

Since Sam and Friends first landed on our glorious, 17-inch, black-and-white TV screens, we’ve been introduced to so many lovable characters. At least seven, if I had to guess. But even with more than half a dozen to choose from, it’s easy for me to identify my favorite: Chicken Liver.

Just look at that guy! When you first glance at him, your mind is filled with exciting questions: Is he a weird-looking person? Or is he actually a sentient chicken liver? Or is he, like, made of chicken liver? If Chicken Liver ever appears on Tonight Starring Jack Paar I certainly hope Paar asks him all of these things.

As an “actor,” Chicken Liver has more range than Henry Fonda or William Holden. He can play the straight man while lip-synching to a comedy record. He can play the comic while lip-synching to a comedy record. He can even sing while lip-synching to a comedy record. There’s nothing Chicken Liver can’t do.

And as if all this wasn’t enough, he also has a really big nose. Big noses are always funny, and the majority of Chicken Liver’s face is occupied by his nose. What could be funnier than that?

Like all fans, I’m hoping Sam & Friends stays on the air for many years to come. And I have a pretty good feeling that as it does, Chicken Liver will emerge as the most prominent character, and someday he’ll become the mascot for all of Jim Henson’s lovable puppets. Who knows? Maybe someday he’ll get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, alongside such superstars as Spring Byington and Fred Stone!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m pretty hungry… so I’m going to go eat some beef tongue.
