In perhaps one of the most surprising events in recent history, the original lineup of Muppet Babies will reunite for the first time since 1991 live onstage at the Hollywood Bowl. Baby Kermit, Baby Piggy, Baby Fozzie, Baby Gonzo, Baby Rowlf, Baby Scooter, Baby Skeeter, and Baby Animal will take to the stage this Labor Day weekend for a concert of their greatest hits, including “We Love Cartoons” and “Keep Your Animal Clean.” And when they play the Bowl, they won’t be alone. While the likes of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts expressed interest in taking part in this once-in-a-lifetime concert, they were flatly rejected in order to get the biggest guest stars on the planet: Baby Bunsen and Baby Beaker. That’s right, misters “Me, I invent things / Mee mee me meeeee” themselves! This is truly the concert Muppet fans, nay, the American public, nay, the world has been clamoring for.
But while this may all sound fun, there’s a purpose behind this concert. The Muppet Babies have teamed up with Crawl Against Diaper Rash (CADR) to donate all proceeds from the concert to diaper rash research. CADR spokesperson Emma Aprilvis said, “Every day, countless babies suffer irritation due to diaper rash. And while there are numerous treatments to deal with this, we believe that with the funding from the Muppet Babies’ show, we can find a cure, so that babies can move free from the fear of diaper rash, whether their diapers are empty or full, cloth or synthetic.” Baby Kermit added, “Even though we’re small, we believe we can make a difference. As long as we’re in bed by 7.”
Details of the concert have been swaddled tight, but speculation is as wild as the babies’ imaginations. Will classic film clips randomly appear? Will it just be a re-staging of 1987’s Muppet Babies: Magic Box? Will Baby Bean Bunny make an appearance following accusations of running a Ponzi scheme? Only time will tell. (Though it’s a safe bet that fireworks will not be involved due to loud noises.) Keep your eyes on this space for further updates.
