RIP Tomie dePaola

We are saddened to learn that beloved children’s book author and illustrator Tomie dePaola has passed away at the age of 85. dePaola published over 200 books in his lifetime, and received both the Newbery Award and the Caldecott Honor for his works.

And like any decorated talent, dePaola crossed paths with the world of the Muppets.

In 2001, he hosted the short-lived Henson Company series Telling Stories with Tomie dePaola on the Hallmark Channel. His co-host was a squirrel named Gabe (performed by John Kennedy), and his stories came to life thanks to a troupe of puppets performed by Bill Barretta, Alison Mork, and Julianne Buescher.

Back when the show originally aired, ToughPigs founder Danny Horn committed a full week to reviewing the series. You can read all about it here.

Of course, not all Henson Company programs are destined to last the test of time, but Telling Stories still holds a place of importance in our history. And we’re proud to include the great Tomie dePaola among the talent involved with another Henson project.
