Remembering Pelé, Muppet Magazine Honoree

A few weeks ago, the world lost Brazilian footballer and superstar Pelé. Inarguably one of the greatest to ever play the game, Pelé was revered as one of the best players in one of the world’s most popular sports. So, y’know, no big deal.

Being as famous and beloved as he was, it didn’t take much more to get the attention of the Muppets. In 1985, Pelé appeared in an issue of Muppet Magazine, interviewed by Gonzo (and writer Emily Greenspan) during a rats vs. chickens game of soccer. You can read the whole interview below (and be sure to click on the images to embiggen!)

In addition to Muppet Magazine, Pelé also appeared in an episode of the Brazilian co-production of Sesame Street, Vila Sésamo, counting to 10.

It’s terrific to see a superstar like Pelé hanging out with Gonzo and using his stardom to teach kids about numbers. And as always, it’s a treat to include Pelé among those who’ve crossed paths with the world of the Muppets. We’ll miss him.
