RIP Dr. John

Mac Rebennack, better known as the famous singer and pianist Dr. John, has passed away.  While Dr. John may be remembered for his song “Right Place, Wrong Time”, his flamboyant costumes, or his New Orleans accent, we remember him for his connections to the Muppet world.

The biggest, as you may be able to tell from the image above, was Dr. John’s influence on the creation of Dr. Teeth.  Jim Henson’s original sketch, as well as Michael Frith’s design, both called out Dr. John as a stylistic icon for the Electric Mayhem band leader.  Even if they didn’t call it out, the hat and beard are a dead giveaway.

In addition to the Dr. Teeth connection, Dr. John also crossed over with Sesame Street twice – first performing the song “The Sailor and the Mermaid” on the In Harmony: A Sesame Street Record album.  Later, he provided the voice of the titular yak in “Yakety Yak – Take it Back”, a PSA about recycling that aired on Sesame Street.

We’re proud to include Dr. John among the celebrities with strong Muppet connections, and we’re especially grateful for his contributions to the creation of a classic Muppet character.
