RIP Carole Hart, Sesame Street’s First Female Writer

In 1969, Sesame Street’s premiere season only had seven credited writers.  Six of those were men, and the seventh was Carole Hart.  Sadly, we have learned that Hart has passed away after a decades-long struggle with cancer.

Carole Hart, along with her husband and writing partner Bruce Hart (, helped to launch Sesame Street, but left after the first season to pursue other projects.  (Unfortunately, Hart’s first name was misspelled as “Carol” in the credits.)  The Harts were also instrumental in the creation of Marlo Thomas’s “Free to Be You and Me”.

As you can tell, Carole Hart paved the way for a generation of female Sesame Street writers, and helped to develop the show we all love so very much.  Thank you, Carole, for your lifetime of quality work.
