This past spring, Tough Pigs’ Joe Hennes and I made several appearances co-hosting Steve Swanson‘s MuppetCast Live internet radio show. You listened to all of them, right? Of course you did.
On the May 27th show, Steve came up with a great topic for discussion: If you met somebody who had never seen the Muppets, what six moments – songs, scenes, or sketches – would you show them to demonstrate what the Muppets are all about?
My list consisted of a few Muppet Show and movie bits and some memorable musical numbers, and Steve and Joe had some great picks, from all-time classics songs like “Rainbow Connection” to moments of pure Muppet comedy like John Cleese refusing to sing “The Impossible Dream” on The Muppet Show.
Now I want to see YOUR list. (Yes, Steve has given me permission to steal his idea.) As unlikely and horrible as it may seem, there probably are a few people on this Earth who don’t know the Muppets. I know I’ve seen a few comments on the recent YouTube videos from people who say things like, “Who are these guys? lol” So not only is it a fun question to think about, it might just prove to be important if you do ever meet some poor, deprived schlimazel who’s never known the joy of Gonzo, never experienced the wonder of Scooter.
So what would be on YOUR list? And why? Keep in mind that these aren’t necessarily the best Muppet bits, but rather those that are most representative of who the Muppets are and what they do. For the radio show, we stuck within the parameters of the Muppet Show franchise, but heck, if you want to include Sesame Street stuff and Fraggle Rock stuff on your list, go right ahead. Whatever you think would get that Muppet vibe across.
Send your list of six things to me at Ryan@ToughPigs.com. And don’t forget the MuppetCast podcast, which is unfettered by the harsh restrictions of radio. You can find that on iTunes and on the web at MuppetCast.com.
Go ahead, send me your list! Then click here to discuss this article on the Tough Pigs forum!
