If you’re working on the next Muppet movie, take one step forward. Not so fast, Segel.
The folks over at Vulture are reporting that director James Bobin and writer Nick Stoller are already at work on the sequel to The Muppets, but Jason Segel won’t be involved. They say it’s mainly because Segel is now a superstar and can’t fit his Muppet writing duties into his schedule. And that’s a likely scenario.
It’s also possible, from this writer’s perspective, that Segel wouldn’t want to be involved in the first place. Now that he’s superfamous, why would he spend time writing a movie he couldn’t star in? He might as well work on a new film (which is pretty much guaranteed to get greenlit) and play the leading role to collect double the paycheck. Of course, that wouldn’t be the case if anyone was interested in the Gary character returning, but his story is over and done and should only live on in home video format.
In any case, this is good news that Bobin and Stoller are still involved, as they lent just as much, if not more, to the Muppets’ return as Segel.
And because why not, here’s a link to Kermit “announcing” the sequel last month. So it’s official. Kermit said so.
